Bring Light to Someone’s Final Chapter

Volunteering with Luminary Hospice is a meaningful way to offer comfort, presence, and connection to individuals and families during one of life’s most tender seasons.

Whether you’re sitting quietly with a patient, supporting a family member, or helping our team behind the scenes, your time and care can make a lasting difference. While volunteers do not provide medical care or make clinical decisions, the human connection they bring is deeply valued. Every role matters, and we take time to thoughtfully match each volunteer’s interests, skills, and availability with opportunities where they can make the greatest impact.

Ways to Volunteer at Luminary

There are many meaningful ways to volunteer with Luminary Hospice, each offering an opportunity to bring comfort, connection, and care to patients, families, and our care teams.

At Luminary, every act of service matters, whether you feel called to sit bedside, ease a caregiver’s burden, or support our team behind the scenes. We thoughtfully match each volunteer’s strengths and availability to meaningful opportunities, because every role contributes to our mission of dignity, presence, and human connection.

Patient support volunteers offer companionship and practical help that brings comfort and reassurance to patients and caregivers. This may include:

  • Friendly visits and conversation
  • Reading aloud or sharing music
  • Light housekeeping or simple meal preparation
  • Running small errands or writing letters
  • Offering caregiver respite so loved ones can rest

Administrative volunteers support our care teams behind the scenes, helping ensure families receive thoughtful, organized care. Tasks may include:

  • Filing, copying, or organizing materials
  • Preparing mailings and outreach materials
  • Sending birthday, sympathy, or “thinking of you” cards
  • Assisting with office operations and logistics

Bereavement volunteers walk alongside families after a loss, offering continued connection and care. Support may include:

  • Phone or in-person check-ins with grieving families
  • Assisting with grief support groups or remembrance events
  • Helping with mailings and outreach
  • Providing compassionate presence during the grieving process

Trained veteran volunteers offer camaraderie, dignity, and shared understanding to fellow veterans receiving hospice care. Veteran support may include:

  • Spending time in conversation or quiet companionship
  • Sharing stories or reflecting on military service
  • Playing cards, reading, or working on puzzles together
  • Offering presence rooted in mutual respect

Licensed or certified volunteers may also support patients and families through complementary services such as:

  • Music therapy
  • Pet therapy visits
  • Reiki or aromatherapy
  • Haircuts or styling
  • Art therapy or legacy projects
