Care That Honors a Life of Service

Military service shapes a person’s life long after their time in uniform ends, and at the end of life, that history can surface in ways that are deeply meaningful, complex, and personal.

Veteran care reflects Luminary Hospice’s commitment to providing hospice care that recognizes the unique experiences, needs, and values of those who have served. This care is guided by respect, understanding, and the belief that honoring service is an essential part of honoring the whole person.

A Veteran-Centered Approach

Veteran care is rooted in the understanding that veterans may carry physical, emotional, spiritual, and moral experiences connected to military service.

These experiences can influence how individuals approach illness, vulnerability, and the end of life. Luminary Hospice is committed to meeting these needs with awareness, cultural understanding, and care that honors both service and humanity. Our clinicians and volunteers receive education in military culture, traditions, and values, helping ensure veterans feel seen, respected, and supported throughout their hospice journey.

Luminary Hospice is proud to participate in the We Honor Veterans program, reflecting our ongoing dedication to veteran-centered hospice care.

Ways We Walk Alongside Veterans

Veteran care includes thoughtful recognition and support that reflects the significance of military service, including:

  • Hospice care delivered by teams educated in military culture and service-related experiences
  • Awareness of issues such as service-related trauma, moral injury, survivor’s guilt, and pride
  • Opportunities for veteran pinning ceremonies to honor service with dignity and gratitude
  • Support for meaningful legacy and recognition moments
  • Collaboration with community partners, including the Warriors Watch Riders, who may provide flag lines during services or escorts to the gravesite

Each element of care is offered with intention, allowing veterans and families to engage in ways that feel meaningful to them.

An Added Layer of Understanding

For some veterans, being supported by someone who understands military life can bring a unique sense of comfort and ease.

As part of veteran care, Luminary offers opportunities for trained veteran volunteers to spend time with hospice patients who have also served. These visits are shaped by what feels meaningful to the patient and family. They may include quiet companionship, listening to service stories, participating in legacy projects, or being present during moments of recognition and remembrance.

The shared understanding between veterans can help create trust and a sense of being truly seen, especially when conversations turn toward service, sacrifice, or unresolved experiences.

For Veterans Interested in Volunteering

Veteran volunteers provide non-clinical support through presence, understanding, and shared respect. If you are a veteran and feel called to walk alongside others at the end of life, we invite you to learn more about volunteering with Luminary.
