Why Early Admission Matters
The Sooner Hospice Begins, the More it Can Help
Hospice is not only for the final days, it is meant to support patients and families during the last months of life.
When care starts early, it creates space for deeper comfort, steady symptom relief, and more meaningful time together.
Early referrals help families receive the full range of hospice support. This includes more than pain control, it brings emotional care, spiritual guidance, and help with daily needs. These services ease stress and help patients live each day with purpose and peace.
Hospice is Not Just for the Final Days
Too often, patients are referred to hospice only in the last few days of life, missing out on the full spectrum of benefits available. Patients and families consistently tell us they wish they had called sooner. According to the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission:
The Commission has previously expressed concern about very short hospice stays. More than one-quarter of hospice decedents enroll in hospice services only in the last week of life, a length of stay which is commonly thought to be of less benefit to patients than enrolling somewhat earlier.MEDPAC Report, March 2016, Chap. 11

This is often the case when treatment is no longer helping or no longer wanted, and the focus turns to comfort and quality of life.
